A Triumph in Community Spirit
Despite the unrelenting rain and wind, a great crowd turned out for the unveiling of the Millennium Stone on Friday 31st December 1999. Not since the 50th commemoration of the Easter Rising in 1966 had the village revelled in such a memorable celebration. The same flag, that marked the anniversary of that heroic time was to show the pride in the village and town-land of Lislevane on this historic day.
The Millennium Stone shows the name of every household in the form of a map, providing a unique keyhole into the past. The unveiling of the stone was carried out by Donnie McCarthy, the oldest resident of Lislevane and Eimer O'Sullivan who, at just 5 weeks, was the youngest.
The Millennium Stone could now be seen in all it's glory. Weighing in at 1.2 tons and measuring 5 feet high and 3 feet across at a thickness of 12inches it was indeed a sight to be hold.
The champagne was duly opened as the celebrations began in earnest. Truly a day for rejoicing and celebrating the wonderful community spirit in Lisevane. A spirit captured by the unique Millennium Stone that will stand proud for many generations through the centuries.
