BEATING THE RECESSION
Maintaining Lislevane as the pretty hamlet that it has now become takes not only dedicated hard work but also plenty of euros.
With the recession beginning to bite, the Lislevane Community Assiciation needed to come up with a way to cut down on what we spend in preparation for the annual National Tidy Towns competition.
Planting the shrub beds in the village green was a good investment and they provide excellent all year round colour. More permanent planting has also taken place behind the village pump in Duck Lane.
The vibrant red Begonias are our signature trademark and are also very reliable and hardy, making them great value. They had to stay. It was agreed that we could dispense with the various hanging baskets although hopefully when the economy picks up they will return.
A big cost for the village was planting the tractor, which is also now part of Lislevane's identity. Summer bedding has been replaced by vegetables, herbs and Nasturtiums which hopefully will put on a good show.
The thought of producing something that we can eat, on top of providing a colourful flower display is quite exciting. Whether it is the insect world that enjoys most of the fruits of our labour remains to be seen.
